TAWAU: The launching of the Tawau Tourism Package yesterday has given a new dimension to the tourism potential of the district, said Deputy Chief Minister, Christina Liew.
“This effort needs to be supported by all because of the potential in job and income generation when more tourists are attracted,” she said when unveiling the 30-package tourism programme at a launching ceremony here yesterday. The event was put together by the Malaysia Association of Tours and Travels (MATTA).
Christina, who is also Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, said that aside from scenic attractions, food and nature can also be promoted in the packages.
“I believe Tawau has the potential to attract tourists from places such as China because of our food and nature parks.”
MATTA president Datuk Tan Kok Liang said MATTA was responding to the minister’s proposal that attractions in Tawau be promoted aggressively,.
Among the packages are those that promote visits to the Maliau Basin and islands in Semporna.
“We expect to be able to attract tourists from South Korea, China, Taiwan, Australia and Singapore,” he said, adding that MATTA is also working with agents to promote the packages to the European market.
